The Browning BLR Lightweight is a modern lever-action rifle distinguished by its use of a detachable box magazine and rack-and-pinion lever mechanism, enabling it to safely chamber high-powered pointed-bullet cartridges that traditional tubular-magazine lever actions cannot. Introduced in 2003 as a lightweight evolution of the original 1969 BLR design, the Lightweight '81 features an aircraft-grade aluminum alloy receiver that keeps weight under 3.1 kilograms while maintaining the strength needed for magnum calibers. The original BLR was introduced in 1969 and manufactured in Belgium until 1972, then production moved to Miroku in Japan. The Model 81 revision came in 1981, and the Lightweight '81 debuted in 2003 with the aluminum alloy receiver and straight-grip stock. Unlike traditional lever actions, the BLR uses a rotating bolt head with multiple locking lugs, similar to a bolt-action rifle, which contributes to its accuracy. The rack-and-pinion lever mechanism provides smoother cycling than traditional cam-operated lever actions. Barrel length is 20 inches for short-action calibers and 22 inches for long-action and magnum calibers. Weight ranges from approximately 6.5 to 7.25 lbs depending on caliber and barrel length.
