About the Heckler & Koch VP9
The Heckler & Koch VP9 is a polymer-framed, striker-fired, semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum. Introduced in 2014, it was HK's first striker-fired pistol since the revolutionary VP70 of 1970, and is marketed as the SFP9 (Striker Fired Pistol, 9mm) outside the United States. The VP9 operates on a modified Browning short-recoil, locked-breech system and features HK's precision strike trigger, which provides a short, light take-up with a clean single-action break at 5.4 lbs and a short 3mm positive reset. Its cold hammer-forged polygonal barrel with a 1:249mm right-hand twist delivers exceptional accuracy and barrel longevity. The VP9's defining ergonomic innovation is its 27-configuration customizable grip system comprising three interchangeable backstraps and six lateral grip panels, allowing precise hand fitment. Additional signature features include ambidextrous slide release levers, an ambidextrous paddle-style magazine release (with a push-button variant available as the VP9-B), aggressive charging supports molded into the rear slide plate for easy manipulation, a low bore axis for reduced muzzle flip, and a MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny accessory rail. The VP9 has been adopted by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force as the SFP9-M and serves as the duty pistol for multiple German state police forces under the SFP9 TR designation, which features a heavier trigger pull compliant with German Technische Richtlinie standards.
The VP9 was HK's first striker-fired pistol since the revolutionary VP70 of 1970, which was the world's first polymer-framed pistol. The VP9 was named 2014 Guns & Ammo Handgun of the Year and its 'charging supports' on the rear slide plate became a signature design feature widely copied by competitors.

The SFP9 TR (Technische Richtlinie) variant used by German police has a trigger pull weight of 30-35 N (6.7-7.9 lbs), significantly heavier than the standard commercial 24 N (5.4 lbs) to comply with German police sidearm regulations. The VP9-B variant, introduced in 2018, replaces the traditional HK paddle magazine release with a push-button release preferred by the American market. Standard magazine capacity is 17 rounds, with 10-round and 15-round options for restricted markets and 20-round extended magazines available. The VP9 uses the same magazine platform across most VP-series pistols. The trigger travel is 6.1mm with a return travel of 3mm. The VP9 was the 2014 Guns & Ammo Handgun of the Year. Despite HK's long history of hammer-fired pistols (P7, USP, P30), the VP9 quickly became one of the company's best-selling commercial handguns.
