About the Husqvarna 640

The Husqvarna 640 is a Swedish bolt-action sporting rifle produced by Husqvarna Vapenfabrik from 1945 until 1956. It is built on a full-size FN commercial Mauser 98 action imported from Fabrique Nationale in Belgium, giving it controlled round feed, a wing safety and a hinged floorplate, and was offered in popular hunting cartridges including the .220 Swift, .270 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield. Fitted with a 60 cm Swedish-steel barrel and a slim checkered walnut sporter stock, the 640 became a well-regarded postwar hunting rifle prized for the quality of its FN Mauser action.

Husqvarna's gun-making roots stretch back to 1689, and the 640 was the company's premier postwar sporter on the imported FN Mauser action before it switched to its own 1600-series design with the Model 1640.

Husqvarna began importing FN Mauser 98 actions in 1939, building the Model 146, 246 and 640 on them. The full-size FN-action 640 was succeeded around 1949 by the in-house HVA 1600-series action of the Model 1640. The 640 is noted for occasionally weaker stock wrists at the tang compared with the later 1640.
