About the Marlin Model 989

The Marlin Model 989 is an American .22 Long Rifle semi-automatic rifle produced by Marlin Firearms from 1962 to 1966. It is the detachable-magazine counterpart to the tube-fed Marlin Model 99, sharing the same blowback action and Marlin's Micro-Groove barrel rifling. Feeding from a 7-round detachable box magazine and fitted with a one-piece walnut stock, the Model 989 was an affordable general-purpose plinking and small-game rifle whose internals foreshadowed Marlin's later Model 60 and Model 795 rimfire rifles.

The Model 989's action lineage runs directly into Marlin's best-selling Model 60 and modern Model 795 rimfire rifles, whose internals remain largely the same design.

Succeeded by the M1 Carbine-styled Model 989 M2 (1966-1979), which added a top handguard, barrel band and 18-inch barrel. The base 989 shares its action with the Model 99 series.
