The Mauser C96 (Construktion 96) is a semi-automatic pistol developed by the Feederle brothers at the Mauser factory in Oberndorf am Neckar, Germany, between 1893 and 1895, and manufactured from 1896 until 1937. Distinguished by its integral box magazine positioned ahead of the trigger guard, long barrel, and characteristic 'broomhandle' grip, the C96 was one of the earliest successful semi-automatic pistol designs. It employs a short-recoil operation with a vertically tilting locking piece and is notable for being fed via 10-round stripper clips loaded from above. The pistol was famously supplied with a detachable wooden shoulder stock that doubled as a holster, extending its effective range significantly. Though never officially adopted as a standard sidearm by any major European military, the C96 saw extensive worldwide service across numerous conflicts including the Boer Wars, World War I, the Russian Revolution, the Chinese Civil War, the Spanish Civil War, and World War II. Over one million units were produced by Mauser, with substantial additional numbers manufactured by unlicensed producers in Spain and China. The C96 became particularly iconic in China, where it was known as the 'box cannon' and was widely used by Nationalist, Communist, and warlord forces alike.

Winston Churchill famously carried a Mauser C96 during the Battle of Omdurman in 1898 and credited it with saving his life during a cavalry charge. The C96's 7.63mm Mauser cartridge was the highest-velocity commercially manufactured pistol round in the world until the .357 Magnum appeared in 1935. In China, the C96 and its copies were so ubiquitous that the pistol was simply known as the 'box cannon' and remained in front-line service well into the 1950s.

The 'Red 9' variant was manufactured during World War I for the German military in 9x19mm Parabellum when supplies of the Luger P08 were insufficient. A large red '9' was carved into the grip to prevent soldiers from accidentally loading 7.63mm ammunition. The M712 Schnellfeuer (rapid fire) variant introduced in 1932 featured select-fire capability and a detachable 20-round magazine, achieving a cyclic rate of 900-1000 RPM. Approximately 98,000 Schnellfeuer models were produced. The Bolo (Bolshevik) model featured a shorter 99mm barrel and smaller grip, named for its popularity among Bolshevik revolutionaries.
