About the Merkel Model 201

The Merkel Model 201 is a German boxlock over-and-under shotgun built by Merkel of Suhl. Part of Merkel's 200 series, it uses the firm's robust Blitz boxlock action secured by double Kersten cross-bolt locks, giving the lightweight scalloped receiver the strength of a heavier sidelock. Typically chambered in 12 gauge with twin stacked barrels, a solid rib, double triggers and figured walnut furniture, the 201 is a refined field and game gun. The 201E variant adds selective automatic ejectors, and receivers are traditionally finished with hand-cut game-scene engraving.

Merkel of Suhl was among the first firms to industrially manufacture over-and-under shotguns, and its Kersten-locked boxlock guns earned the Grand Prix at the 1937 Paris World Exhibition. After WWII the company was nationalised under East Germany before returning to private ownership following reunification.

Merkel Model 201 specifications

The 'E' suffix on the 201E denotes ejectors. The 200 series spans several engraving and finish grades; the 201 sits above the plainer 200 and below the more ornately engraved 202/203 guns. Also offered in 16, 20 and 28 gauge.
