About the Type 64

The Type 64 is a Chinese integrally suppressed semi-automatic pistol developed for clandestine and special-operations use. Chambered in a proprietary low-velocity 7.65x17mm rimless cartridge, it feeds from a 9-round detachable box magazine and operates on a blowback action. Its integral suppressor encloses a large steel case containing steel mesh and baffles to cool and slow the muzzle blast. A cross-bolt lock on the slide can disable the blowback mechanism, turning the pistol into a manually cycled, single-shot weapon to eliminate the sound of the reciprocating slide for maximum stealth.

Adopted by the Chinese armed forces in the mid-1960s, the Type 64 was one of the earliest purpose-built integrally suppressed service pistols, designed from the outset for silent operation rather than adapting an existing handgun with a screw-on can.

Safety

  • Manual safety

The low-power purpose-built cartridge keeps the projectile subsonic and contributes to the weapon's quietness while limiting effective range to roughly 10-20 metres. Largely superseded in service by the lighter, more compact Type 67 silenced pistol.
