About the Pietta 1836 Paterson
The Pietta 1836 Paterson is a faithful reproduction of Samuel Colt's first commercially produced revolver, the Colt Paterson. Originally patented in 1836, the Paterson was revolutionary as the first practical repeating firearm. Pietta's reproduction captures the distinctive features: a retractable trigger that only appears when the hammer is cocked, a five-shot cylinder in .36 caliber, and an octagonal barrel. Available in standard and Super Deluxe finishes.
The Colt Paterson was the gun that started it all - Samuel Colt's first revolver design, produced in a small factory in Paterson, New Jersey. Though commercially unsuccessful initially (Colt's company went bankrupt in 1842), the Paterson proved its worth in the hands of Texas Rangers fighting Comanche warriors. Captain Jack Hays and his men used Paterson revolvers at the Battle of Walker Creek in 1844, demonstrating for the first time that mounted troops with revolvers could defeat a numerically superior force. This combat success led directly to Samuel Walker approaching Colt to design the larger Walker Colt, launching Colt's second - and permanent - firearms empire.
