The Pietta 1860 Army Sheriff is a compact cap-and-ball revolver, a shortened reproduction of the Colt Model 1860 Army chambered in .44 caliber percussion. Where the standard 1860 Army carries an 8-inch barrel, the Sheriff model trims the round barrel to 5.5 inches for a handier, more concealable package favored for close-range use and Cowboy Action Shooting. It retains the open-top frame, rebated six-shot cylinder, case-hardened steel frame, brass trigger guard and walnut grips of the full-size gun, loaded via a hinged rammer beneath the barrel and fired one chamber at a time by manually cocking the hammer.

The Sheriff or Storekeeper configuration of the 1860 Army harks back to the frontier practice of cutting down full-length cavalry revolvers into shorter, more wieldable belt guns for lawmen and townsfolk. Pietta's modern Sheriff model recreates that abbreviated silhouette for black-powder shooters and Cowboy Action competitors who want the balance and concealment of a snubbier .44 while keeping the authentic open-top Colt lines of the Civil War-era Army.
