The Remington Model 788 is an American bolt-action rifle produced from 1967 to 1983 as an economical companion to the Model 700. Designed by Wayne Leek, it used a rear-locking bolt with nine locking lugs arranged in three rows of three, allowing a short 60-degree bolt lift for extra scope clearance and a fast 2.5-millisecond lock time. Chambered in .308 Winchester with a detachable box magazine and a 22-inch barrel, the 788 earned a reputation as a budget 'tackdriver' prized for accuracy that often rivaled rifles costing far more.

Marketed as Remington's budget rifle, the 788 became a cult favorite among hunters and benchrest shooters because its stiff, rear-locking action frequently delivered accuracy that embarrassed far more expensive bolt guns.

The .308 Winchester chambering used the short-action receiver and a single-column detachable magazine holding 3 rounds. In 1980 the stock was revised with a fluted comb, thicker pistol grip, and wider fore-end. Left-hand variants were produced in select calibers.
