About the Remington-Smoot No. 1 Revolver

The Remington-Smoot No. 1 is a small single-action pocket revolver chambered in .30 Short Rimfire, produced by E. Remington and Sons from 1875. Designed by William S. Smoot, it is a five-shot spur-trigger revolver built on a solid frame, with the cylinder removed via the base pin for loading and unloading. It was the smallest of the Smoot-patent Remington series (No. 1 through No. 4) aimed at the concealable civilian self-defense market of the 1870s and 1880s.

The Smoot-designed Remington pocket revolvers loaded not through a gate but by pulling the base pin and lifting the cylinder out entirely, a simple economy measure that kept these little self-defense guns cheap in the crowded 1870s pocket-revolver trade.
