About the Retolaza Puppy

The Retolaza Puppy is a Spanish blowback-operated semi-automatic vest-pocket pistol produced by Retolaza Hermanos of Eibar. Chambered in the diminutive .22 Short rimfire cartridge, it follows the early-20th-century Eibar pocket-pistol pattern with a round butt grip, fixed sights, and a manual safety catch mounted at the rear of the frame. Marketed under the 'Puppy' trade name as an inexpensive concealable defensive arm, it was one of numerous small-caliber pocket automatics the Retolaza brothers built for the civilian market until the Spanish Civil War ended their production.

The Retolaza brothers began making firearms around 1890 with 'Velo-Dog' pocket revolvers before becoming among the early pioneers of automatic pistol manufacture in Eibar, churning out low-cost pocket pistols under a string of catchy trade names.
