About the Retolaza Vilar

The Retolaza Vilar is a .32 ACP blowback semi-automatic pocket pistol built by Retolaza Hermanos of Eibar, Spain. It is one of the many near-identical Spanish 'Ruby'-type pistols patterned on John Browning's FN/Colt Model 1903, mass-produced to help meet the French Army's demand for sidearms during World War I and later sold commercially. It uses a fixed barrel, a single-action concealed-hammer mechanism, and a single-stack detachable box magazine.

During World War I, France could not make pistols fast enough, so it turned to dozens of small Eibar workshops like Retolaza that churned out interchangeable 'Ruby' clones under names such as 'Vilar' - guns of wildly varying quality that were bought largely on faith by the crateload.
