About the Ruger Gunsite Scout

The Ruger Gunsite Scout is a bolt-action scout rifle introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in 2011. Developed in partnership with the Gunsite Academy, it embodies the general-purpose scout rifle concept defined by Jeff Cooper: a short, handy, hard-hitting rifle built around a 16.5-inch barrel and chambered in .308 Winchester. It features a Mauser-style controlled-round-feed action derived from the Ruger M77, a detachable AICS-pattern box magazine, integral ghost-ring iron sights, and a forward Picatinny rail for mounting an intermediate-eye-relief (scout) scope.

The scout rifle concept was conceived by Colonel Jeff Cooper, who envisioned a single light, fast-handling general-purpose rifle effective on targets out to about 450 meters. Ruger's interpretation was developed with Cooper's Gunsite Academy and marketed under the slogan 'The one rifle to have if you could have only one.'
