About the Sako M591

The Sako M591 is a Finnish medium-action bolt-action hunting rifle produced by Sako from 1992 to 1996 as the replacement for the earlier L579 Forester. Built on Sako's medium-length receiver sized for the .308 Winchester family of cartridges, it was chambered in .308 Winchester, .243 Winchester, .22-250 Remington and 7mm-08 Remington. It fed from a five-round internal box magazine with a hinged floorplate and combined Sako's own extractor, a separate recoil lug and a factory-set Tikka-pattern adjustable trigger with a finely finished walnut stock, upholding the marque's reputation for out-of-the-box accuracy.

The M591 occupied the middle rung of Sako's three-action sporting family, purpose-built around the short .308 case so hunters could carry a lighter, faster-handling rifle than a full-length magnum action allowed, and its actions remain a favourite donor for modern custom builds.

Sako M591 specifications

Part of Sako's 491/591/691 model-number range (short/medium/long action) that succeeded the earlier L-series and preceded the Sako 75 of 1997. Offered in Hunter, Deluxe, Super Deluxe, Carbine, Battue and heavy-barrel Varmint forms, in both right- and left-hand configurations. Standard rifles carried a 22.5-inch barrel and weighed about 6 lb 14 oz; varmint models used 24- or 26-inch heavy barrels at around 9 lb.
