About the Savage Model 40

The Savage Model 40 is an American bolt-action centerfire sporting rifle produced by Savage Arms from 1928 to 1940. Marketed as the Model 40 Super Sporter, it fed from a detachable box magazine and was chambered in popular hunting cartridges of the interwar era including .250-3000 Savage, .30-30 Winchester, .300 Savage and .30-06 Springfield. It was offered alongside the upgraded Model 45 Super, which added a ramped front sight, checkering and other deluxe touches. The Model 40 gave hunters an affordable, accurate magazine-fed bolt rifle and helped establish Savage's reputation for value-priced sporting arms.

Introduced during the interwar boom in American sport hunting, the Model 40 Super Sporter was Savage's bid to offer a modern detachable-magazine bolt rifle at a working man's price, bridging the gap between the company's earlier Model 1920 and its later, hugely successful Model 110 line.

Savage Model 40 specifications

Factory barrel lengths varied by chambering: 22 inches for .30-30 and .250-3000, and 24 inches for .30-06 and .300 Savage. The deluxe Model 45 shared the same action. Not to be confused with the unrelated modern Savage Model 40 single-shot varmint rifle in .22 Hornet.
