About the M1903A1 (USMC Unertl)
The M1903A1 with Unertl 8x scope is the legendary USMC sniper rifle of World War II and the Korean War, representing the Marines' independent approach to precision shooting that diverged from the U.S. Army's standardized M1903A4. Built on carefully selected M1903A1 Springfield rifles with the Type C pistol-grip stock, the rifles were fitted with the high-quality 8-power John Unertl target scope on externally adjustable mounts at the USMC Philadelphia Depot beginning in late 1942. The combination of the Springfield's inherently accurate action, a hand-selected match-grade barrel, and the superior Unertl optic created what many consider the finest American sniper rifle of the WWII era.
The M1903A1 Unertl became synonymous with Marine Corps sniping, from the jungles of Guadalcanal and Okinawa to the frozen hills of Korea. During the Pacific campaign, Marine snipers used these rifles to devastating effect against Japanese officers and machine gun crews at ranges beyond effective return fire. In Korea, legendary Marine sniper Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock would later carry on the tradition of the M1903A1 Unertl, though he is more famously associated with the Winchester Model 70 in Vietnam. The rifle established the Marine Corps' reputation for fielding the finest snipers in American military history.

The Unertl 8x scope was significantly more powerful than the 2.5x Weaver M73B1 used on the Army's M1903A4, giving Marine snipers a substantial advantage in target identification and precision at range. With standard M2 Ball ammunition, the rifle could group 7.5 inches at 600 yards, but with M72 Match ammunition, groups tightened to 3.5 inches at the same distance (approximately 1.5 MOA with ball, 0.5 MOA with match). The externally adjustable scope mounts required the shooter to tap the scope tube forward against a spring-loaded recoil shoulder after each shot to return it to battery, a quirk that became second nature to trained Marine snipers.
