About the Stevens 555

The Stevens 555 is an affordable over/under break-action shotgun produced for the Savage Arms Stevens brand. Built around a lightweight aluminum receiver with a steel breech-face insert, it pairs chrome-lined carbon-steel barrels with a Turkish walnut stock and forearm, keeping the 12-gauge model down to roughly 6.2 lbs (around 2.8 kg) for fast, comfortable handling in the field. It feeds two shells through its stacked barrels, fired by a single selective mechanical trigger, with a tang-mounted manual safety doubling as the barrel selector and five interchangeable flush choke tubes (cylinder, improved cylinder, modified, improved modified and full). Offered in 12, 20 and 28 gauge plus .410 bore, the 555 brought a genuine over/under to a sub-$700 price point, making it a popular choice for upland hunters, sporting-clays shooters and first-time stack-barrel owners.

When Savage's Stevens line dropped a Turkish-built over/under under $700, it cracked open a class long ruled by pricey Italian and Belgian stack-barrels. Light in the hand thanks to its aluminum receiver, the 555 became the everyman's break-action, slung over the shoulder of upland hunters and weekend clay shooters who wanted twin barrels without the twin-barrel sticker shock.

Manufactured in Turkey for Savage Arms under the Stevens label. The base 555 uses spring-loaded extractors; the 555 Enhanced upgrades to automatic ejectors, an imperial walnut stock and a silver, laser-engraved filigree receiver. Compact models use 24-inch barrels and a shortened 13.25-13.5 inch length of pull for smaller-framed shooters, while the 555 Trap adds a higher Monte Carlo comb and ported barrels for clay games. Listed 12-gauge weight and dimensions reference the 28-inch-barrel hardwood/walnut model; sub-gauges typically run 26-inch barrels and weigh about 5.5 lbs.
