About the Mannlicher-Schoenauer M1950

The Mannlicher-Schoenauer M1950 is an Austrian bolt-action sporting rifle built by Steyr and introduced in 1950 when civilian production resumed after the Second World War. It retained the classic Mannlicher-Schoenauer action with Otto Schoenauer's smooth spool-type rotary magazine, a double set trigger and a flat butterknife bolt handle, and was offered in both full-length (full-stock) carbine and half-stock rifle forms. Chambered most commonly in modern hunting cartridges such as the .30-06 Springfield and .270 Winchester alongside the traditional 6.5x54mm Mannlicher-Schoenauer, it carried on the family's reputation for exceptionally slick cycling and fine handling.

When Steyr revived the storied Mannlicher-Schoenauer action for the civilian market in 1950, the rifles quickly regained their pre-war cult following among hunters, who prized the buttery-smooth rotary magazine and glass-slick bolt that had made the line legendary from the African veldt to the Alps.

The M1950 was the first post-war Mannlicher-Schoenauer sporting model. It was progressively refined: the 1952 model swept the bolt handle back for easier shouldered use, and by 1963 a Monte Carlo cheekpiece was offered to suit telescopic sights. Exact per-caliber barrel lengths and weights varied between the half-stock rifle and full-stock carbine configurations.
