The Argentine Mauser Model 1909 was a Gewehr 98 pattern bolt-action battle rifle designed for the Argentine Army & were produced both in Germany & in Argentina. The Mauser 1909 was a slightly modified copy of the Gewehr 98. Among other modifications, the Lange Visier sight (often referred to as the 'roller coaster') was replaced by a tangent leaf sight due to better munitions which provided a flatter trajectory The M1909 was also able to use the bayonet of the Mauser 1891 it replaced. Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken delivered only 200,000 rifles while around 85,000 rifles were manufactured by the Fabrica Militar de Armas Portátiles, governmental plants in Rosario & Santa Fe. As can be seen, this rifle was made in Berlin & the quality is obvious. Correctly, the bolt, receiver & cleaning rod are all left 'in the white' instead of being blued & the remaining finish is excellent. Late in the 19th & early in the 20th Century, numerous South American countries purchased Mauser rifles for their military as they were often quarrelling between themselves, if not at actual war. Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Columbia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Costa Rica & of course Argentina all procured Mauser rifles from the Germans as these were seen as the best military rifles then available. The quality varied, as some countries were more wealthy than others & it became quite a status symbol among the various Latin American dictators (sorry, completely legitimate governments who were adored by their citizens). This rifle is in excellent condition as can be seen in the photos & fully matching numbered right down to the cleaning rod! Quite unusually & against official Argentine policy, the national crest has been retained when it left service & not ground as was customary. All Latin American countries had their crest on their rifles & as such were very paranoid about their rifles being used by a third party from a neighbouring Latin American to incriminate them in their many border skirmishes against each other or by insurgents wanting to frame them or getting caught using their rifles for nefarious activities. What this means is this is an excellent example which is not only fully matching but completely original, making it a desirable & reasonably scarce rifle from when Berlin produced very high quality rifles for export. It is still chambered in the original calibre & ammunition is readily available from most Australian gun shops. Do your own research & you will know if this is for you.
