Mosin Nagant M.38 Carbine

Mint with original sling! Offered for sale is this mint M.38 which has been in a private collection for decades. Based on the standard full-length M1891/30 Mosin Nagant, the M38 was designed & manufactured between 1939-1945 to be a compact carbine equipping Soviet rear-echelon & non-combat military personnel, however many of these rifles would instead see combat during the Second World War. They would later be replaced in service by the M1944 Carbine starting in 1943. This particular M38 was manufactured in 1943 in Izhevsk, Udmurtia by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant (known today as Kalashnikov Concern) and as such bears the iconic Izhevsk crest consisting of an arrow in a triangle below the serial number on the receiver. When war with Germany broke out, the need to produce Mosin–Nagants in vast quantities led to a further simplification of machining & a subsequent drop off in finish of the rifles. The wartime Mosins are easily identified by the presence of tool marks & rough finishing that never would have passed the inspectors in peacetime & this can be seen clearly on this rifle. Despite a lack of both aesthetic focus & uniformity, the basic functionality of the Mosins was unimpaired. The barrel of the M.38 was shortened by 21.6 cm (8.5 in) to bring the weapon down to an overall length of 101.6 cm (40.0 in), with the forearm shortened in proportion. The idea was to issue the M38 to troops such as combat engineers, signal corps & artillerymen, who could conceivably need to defend themselves from sudden enemy advances, but whose primary duties lay behind the front lines. As such, the M.38 was not designed to be equipped with a bayonet. This example is in outstanding post Soviet post war refurb condition. When the SKS become the standard rifle of the Red Army, the USSR refurbished many WW2 rifles & stored them away ready to send them out to 3rd world shit holes to be used in causing trouble for the West. In the 1980's, many were sold off as 'milsurp' rifles & this is one of them, although there appears to be no US import mark. Unsurprisingly, the bolt does not match but other numbers do. We are offering this rifle as a collectable piece of military history & acknowledge the grievous atrocities committed by the Soviet regime & some of its military, particularly toward the peoples of occupied post war Europe. In no way do we condone or glorify the Communist regime which must be remembered for the vile stain on human history & waste of resources during the so called 'Cold War' that it was. We think we have described it accurately & correctly but do not claim to be infallible so if we have got anything wrong, it is unintentional & are happy for feedback from people who know more than we do. Whilst we check these out for serviceability, the warranty has expired & this is sold on an 'as is' basis. As with all used guns, we recommend you have this checked by a suitably qualified person prior to shooting.
