Description
A late-Victorian era Webley Mark I revolver manufactured by Webley & Scott of Birmingham. This is one of an approximate 40,000 Mark I revolvers manufactured between 1887 and 1894, with the left-hand side of the frame stamped "Webley Mark I Patents." This revolver appears to have been issued to the colonial New South Wales Government, as the rear of the frame bears the text "NSWG 265 10/99" ("265" likely being its allocated inventory number and "10/99" indicating that it was accepted into service in October of 1899). The Webley Mark I revolver saw service with Australian colonial troops during the Boer War, and shortly after Federation before its eventual replacement with the later Webley Mark IV. Additionally, another NSWG-issued Mark I revolver with the serial number 24877 was carried in the war by Australia's first Victoria Cross recipient, Sir Reginald Howse.
