About the HK417 DMR

The HK417 DMR is the designated marksman rifle variant of the Heckler & Koch HK417 battle rifle, featuring a 508mm (20-inch) heavy barrel optimized for precision shooting at extended ranges. Built on HK's proven short-stroke gas piston operating system derived from the G36, the HK417 DMR combines the reliability and durability of a battle-tested platform with the accuracy needed for the DMR role. The rifle uses a free-floating barrel within a full-length quad rail handguard, with the barrel and rail system completely isolated from the lower receiver to eliminate stress-induced point-of-impact shift. The HK417 DMR accepts standard HK417/G28 20-round detachable box magazines and features fully ambidextrous controls. The Bundeswehr adopted a refined version of the HK417 DMR as the G28 in 2012, and the United States Army selected the HK G28E as the M110A1 Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS) in 2016 to replace the aging Knight's Armament M110.

The HK417 DMR gained prominence when the US Army selected its G28E variant as the M110A1 CSASS in 2016, beating out established competitors to replace the venerable Knight's Armament M110. The selection was driven by the HK417's superior reliability in harsh environments, attributed to its short-stroke piston system running cleaner and cooler than the direct impingement M110. German Bundeswehr designated marksmen deployed the G28 extensively in Afghanistan, where the rifle's combination of semi-automatic fire and sub-MOA precision proved invaluable for engaging insurgents at ranges beyond 600 meters.

The HK417 is offered in four barrel lengths: 305mm (12-inch) Assaulter, 406mm (16-inch) Recce, 508mm (20-inch) DMR/Sniper, and a shorter carbine configuration. The 20-inch barrel DMR variant is the most common for designated marksman use. The G28 designation used by the Bundeswehr refers to an enhanced variant with a RAL8000 (tan) finish, Schmid & Bender 3-20x50 PM II scope, and various ergonomic refinements. The M110A1 CSASS designation used by the US Army represents a further evolution with specific American requirements. The HK417 DMR can achieve sub-MOA accuracy with match-grade ammunition. The short-stroke piston system runs significantly cleaner than the direct impingement AR-10 variants it competes against.
