The Heckler & Koch PSG1 (Prazisionsschutzengewehr 1, or Precision Marksman Rifle 1) is a semi-automatic sniper rifle developed in response to the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre. During the crisis, West German police lacked the precision shooting capability to neutralize the Palestinian terrorists holding Israeli athletes hostage, resulting in the deaths of all eleven hostages. Heckler & Koch was subsequently commissioned to develop a high-accuracy, semi-automatic precision rifle for law enforcement and counter-terrorism use. Based on the G3 battle rifle's roller-delayed blowback operating system, the PSG1 features a heavy 650mm free-floating barrel with HK's signature polygonal rifling, a match-grade trigger with a crisp 1.5kg pull, and a fully adjustable stock with cheek piece and buttpad. The PSG1 is capable of sub-MOA accuracy with match-grade ammunition, making it one of the most accurate semi-automatic rifles ever produced. Its semi-automatic action provides a significant advantage over bolt-action sniper rifles in scenarios requiring rapid follow-up shots, which was precisely the capability identified as lacking during the Munich massacre.

The PSG1 was born from tragedy. During the 1972 Munich Olympics, members of the Palestinian militant group Black September took eleven Israeli athletes hostage. When West German police attempted a rescue at Furstenfeldbruck airfield, they were unable to neutralize the terrorists with the weapons available, and all eleven hostages were killed. The aftermath spurred the creation of GSG 9, Germany's elite counter-terrorism unit, and prompted Heckler & Koch to develop what would become the first purpose-built precision sniper rifle for law enforcement and counter-terrorism operations. The PSG1 has since become a legend in firearms culture, featured prominently in numerous films, video games, and military fiction.

HK PSG1 specifications

The PSG1 is extremely expensive, with new examples historically commanding prices of $10,000 or more, making it one of the most costly sniper rifles available. The rifle accepts standard G3/HK91 magazines and can use 5-, 10-, or 20-round detachable box magazines, as well as an optional 50-round drum. The PSG1-A1 variant was introduced in 2006 with modernized features. The MSG90 (Militarisches Scharfschutzengewehr) is a lightened and strengthened militarized variant that addresses the PSG1's excessive weight and cost while maintaining acceptable accuracy for military applications. The PSG1 uses polygonal rifling rather than conventional land-and-groove rifling, which contributes to its exceptional accuracy and barrel longevity. Despite its stellar reputation for accuracy, the rifle's 7.2kg empty weight makes it one of the heaviest sniper rifles in its caliber class.
