About the Marlin Model 1898

The Marlin Model 1898 was Marlin Firearms' first pump-action (slide-action) shotgun, chambered in 12 gauge with a 2-3/4 in (70 mm) chamber. It featured an exposed side hammer echoing Marlin's lever-action rifles, a takedown design, and a tubular magazine. Produced from 1898 to 1905 in several grades and configurations, it was Marlin's entry into a market dominated by the Winchester Model 1897.

The Model 1898 deliberately mimicked Marlin's large-caliber lever rifles - right down to the visible right-side hammer - so it looks like a lever rifle that pumps; it was Marlin's bid to compete with the dominant Winchester Model 1897.
