The Mossberg 990 SPX is a gas-operated semi-automatic 12-gauge tactical shotgun representing Mossberg's newest semi-auto platform. Built around a smooth-running gas-vent operating system, the 990 SPX ships with a Magpul SGA adjustable stock with spacers for length-of-pull adjustment from 12 to 14 inches. The 18.5-inch barrel features an integrated heat shield forend with M-LOK accessory slots and QD sling ports for versatile mounting options. The receiver is optic-ready with an RMSc-pattern cut and includes three adapter plates for mounting RMR, Docter, and Leupold micro dots. Metal ghost ring rear and fiber optic front sights provide reliable co-witness capability. An oversized ergonomic safety with red indicator and oversized bolt release enhance tactical handling.

The Mossberg 990 SPX arrived in 2025 as the company's most premium semi-automatic tactical shotgun, building on lessons learned from the 930 and 940 Pro platforms. Its partnership with Magpul for the factory SGA stock and integrated heat shield forend signaled Mossberg's intent to compete directly with premium tactical semi-auto shotguns from Benelli and Beretta.
