About the Norinco Type 97

The Norinco Type 97 is a Chinese 12-gauge pump-action shotgun manufactured by Hawk Industries, a division of China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO). Patterned closely on the proven American Remington Model 870, it feeds from a 5-round internal tubular magazine and is chambered to handle both standard and 3-inch (76 mm) magnum shells. Adopted for military, paramilitary, and law enforcement service as well as exported to the civilian market, it is built around a steel receiver with iron sights and serves in anti-riot, security, and general-purpose roles.

Like many Chinese small arms of the era, the Type 97 is a close adaptation of a battle-proven Western design, in this case Remington's ubiquitous Model 870 pump shotgun, reworked for domestic production and export under the Hawk Industries label.
