The QBU-88, also known as the Type 88 sniper rifle, is a Chinese semi-automatic designated marksman rifle chambered in the indigenous 5.8x42mm cartridge. Featuring a distinctive bullpup configuration, the QBU-88 was developed as part of China's comprehensive small arms modernization program to provide platoon-level precision fire support. The bullpup layout gives the rifle a compact overall length of just 920mm while retaining a full 620mm barrel, making it significantly more maneuverable than conventional DMR designs while maintaining effective range out to 800 meters.

The QBU-88 represents China's ambitious bet on a unique caliber. While every other major military power uses either 5.56mm or 7.62mm for their marksman rifles, China developed an entirely indigenous 5.8mm cartridge ecosystem, accepting the logistical isolation in exchange for what they claim is a ballistically superior intermediate round.

The rifle uses a dedicated heavier 5.8x42mm sniper cartridge (DVP88) with a 5.1g steel-core bullet optimized for accuracy and penetration at extended ranges, distinct from the standard DBP87 infantry round. The bullpup layout was chosen to maximize barrel length while keeping the weapon compact for motorized infantry. The rifle is typically issued with a 3-9x variable power scope. Accuracy is reported at approximately 1.5 MOA with match ammunition. The QBU-88's relatively small caliber limits its effectiveness compared to 7.62mm DMR systems, but the reduced recoil allows faster follow-up shots.
