About the Remington 700 5R

The Remington 700 5R is a milspec-grade bolt-action precision rifle featuring the distinctive 5R rifling pattern with five lands and grooves. Introduced in 2003, the rifle was designed to bring M24 Sniper Weapon System-level barrel quality to the civilian and law enforcement market. The 5R rifling pattern, named for its five asymmetric lands with radiused edges, reduces bullet deformation during firing compared to conventional 6-groove rifling, resulting in improved accuracy and easier barrel cleaning. The stainless steel 24-inch barrel features an 11.2-degree twist rate identical to the military M24, mounted on a stainless M700 action bedded into an H-S Precision composite stock with aluminum bedding block. The X-Mark Pro trigger is factory-set at approximately 3.5 pounds and is externally adjustable. Available in both .308 Winchester and .300 Winchester Magnum, the 700 5R delivers M24-comparable accuracy at a fraction of the military system's cost.

The Remington 700 5R brought military-grade 5R rifling to civilian shooters, offering the same barrel technology found in the US Army's M24 Sniper Weapon System. The rifle became a favorite among competitive long-range shooters who recognized it as the closest factory equivalent to the military's precision platform.

The 5R rifling designation refers to the five-groove rifling pattern with radiused (rounded) land edges, as opposed to the sharp-edged lands in conventional rifling. This reduces jacket deformation and copper fouling. The 1:11.2 inch twist rate matches the M24 SWS specification. The Gen 2 version added several improvements including a threaded barrel option. Weight is approximately 8.5 lbs. The 5R also comes with a 20-inch threaded barrel option in .308 Winchester.

This is a variant of the Remington Model 700.
