The M40A6 is the latest iteration of the venerable M40 sniper rifle series that has served the United States Marine Corps since the Vietnam War. Built on the Remington 700 short action, the M40A6 incorporates a modernized chassis stock with adjustable length of pull and cheek piece, improved suppressor compatibility, and an enhanced trigger. Like all M40 variants, each rifle is individually hand-built by USMC armorers at the Precision Weapons Section in Quantico, Virginia, maintaining the tradition of custom-crafted precision that has defined the series for over five decades.

The M40 lineage is one of the longest-serving sniper rifle platforms in any military, with USMC Scout Snipers using variants of the Remington 700-based system continuously since 1966. Carlos Hathcock, the legendary USMC sniper with 93 confirmed kills in Vietnam, used the original M40, cementing the platform's iconic status in military sniper history.

The M40A6 features a Remington 700 short action bedded into a fiberglass-composite stock with aluminum bedding block. The rifle is compatible with the AN/PVS-22 and AN/PVS-30 night vision devices. Each M40A6 is required to shoot sub-MOA groups at 300 yards during acceptance testing. The M40 series is being gradually supplemented by the Mk 13 Mod 7 in .300 Winchester Magnum for extended range capability.
