About the Remington Model 722

The Remington Model 722 is an American short-action, bolt-action centerfire hunting rifle produced from 1948 to 1962. A short-action companion to the long-action Model 721, it was designed by Merle 'Mike' Walker and Homer W. Young and was marketed as the first truly modern, mass-produced centerfire sporting rifle, featuring a cylindrical receiver, a strong twin-lug bolt with a recessed bolt face that fully enclosed the cartridge head, and an internal box magazine. The 722 was offered in chamberings including .222 Remington, .222 Remington Magnum, .243 Winchester, .244 Remington, .257 Roberts, .300 Savage and .308 Winchester. Its receiver and action directly led to the legendary Remington Model 700.

The 721/722 series was Remington's clean-sheet postwar effort to build a strong, accurate centerfire rifle using modern mass-production methods. Its tubular receiver and enclosed-head bolt later formed the basis of the Remington Model 700, one of the most successful bolt-action rifles ever made.

Approximately 117,751 Model 722 rifles were produced. In .257 Roberts the rifle typically carried a 24-inch barrel and a four-round internal magazine. The 721/722 action design was the direct ancestor of the Remington Model 700.
