About the Remington No. 4 Rolling Block
The Remington No. 4 Rolling Block is a single-shot rimfire rifle and the smallest member of Remington's famous rolling block family. Introduced in 1890, it used the simple, robust rolling block action scaled down for small-bore cartridges such as .22 Short, .22 Long, .22 Long Rifle, .25 Stevens, .32 Short, and .32 Long. Marketed as an inexpensive boys' and small-game rifle, it typically wore a 22.5-inch octagon barrel, a blued barrel with case-hardened frame, and a walnut stock. A takedown mechanism was added in 1901 to ease carrying and cleaning.
The No. 4 scaled Remington's battle-proven rolling block down to a friendly .22, and its No. 4-S 'Boy Scout' version became one of the rifles a generation of American youngsters learned to shoot with.
