About the Sako Quad

The Sako Quad is a Finnish bolt-action rimfire rifle introduced in 2005 with a defining feature unique among production rimfires: a tool-change interchangeable-barrel system that allows the same receiver and stock to be re-chambered in seconds between four different rimfire cartridges - .22 Long Rifle, .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire, and .17 Mach 2. The user inserts a special tool, turns it three full rotations, tilts the barrel up to release the action, and slots in another barrel; point of impact is retained between swaps. Two magazine bodies are supplied (one for the shorter .22 LR / .17 Mach 2 case, one for the longer .22 WMR / .17 HMR), and either a wood or synthetic stock with a Monte Carlo cheekpiece is available. The Quad was discontinued circa 2017, replaced in the Sako rimfire lineup by the simpler single-caliber Finnfire II.

The Quad was the only mainstream production bolt-action rimfire ever sold with a true four-caliber switch-barrel system - one rifle, four cartridges, no gunsmith required. Sako engineered the breech and barrel-collar interface so precisely that point of impact was retained after a barrel swap, making it possible for a hunter to carry a single Quad receiver and switch between subsonic .22 LR for rabbits, .22 WMR for fox, .17 HMR for long-range varmints, and .17 Mach 2 for inexpensive plinking - all in the same morning.
