About the Savage Model 775

The Savage Model 775 is a long-recoil semi-automatic shotgun produced by Savage Arms from the early 1950s to the mid-1960s. Built on the classic Browning Auto-5 pattern licensed and adapted by Savage, it distinguished itself with a lightweight aluminum-alloy receiver that made it noticeably lighter than its steel-framed sibling, the Model 755. Chambered for 2 3/4-inch 12-gauge shells and fed from a tubular magazine, the 775 was a popular and affordable field gun for hunting and sport shooting.

Savage's postwar 700-series shotguns adapted John Browning's long-recoil Auto-5 mechanism for the American value market. The 775 followed the same lightweight-receiver philosophy that Remington used with its Model 11-48, trimming weight from a proven recoil-operated design.
