About the Smith & Wesson SW1911SC E-Series

The Smith & Wesson SW1911SC E-Series is a Commander-size, single-action semi-automatic pistol chambered in .45 ACP, featuring a scandium alloy frame that dramatically reduces weight compared to traditional all-steel 1911 pistols. Part of Smith & Wesson's E-Series lineup, the 1911SC weighs just 28.8 ounces (816 grams) empty, approximately 25% lighter than a comparable steel-framed Commander. The 108mm (4.25-inch) stainless steel barrel and slide are mated to the lightweight scandium alloy frame, which uses a round-butt profile (bobtail) for enhanced concealment and comfort during all-day carry. The overall length of 202mm (7.95 inches) places it squarely in the Commander-size category. The pistol uses a titanium firing pin for inertia-safe operation and features a skeletonized hammer, beavertail grip safety with speed bump, ambidextrous thumb safety, extended magazine release, and an oversized extractor. Sights are tritium night sights front and rear, providing low-light target acquisition capability essential for a carry pistol. The two-tone finish combines a matte black scandium frame with a stainless steel slide, and the pistol ships with laminated wood grip panels featuring the fish-scale pattern characteristic of the E-Series. The SW1911SC comes with one 7-round flush magazine and one 8-round extended magazine with bumper pad.

The SW1911SC represents Smith & Wesson's solution to the eternal 1911 dilemma: how to make a full-caliber .45 ACP 1911 light enough for everyday carry without sacrificing the strength needed to handle thousands of rounds. By using a scandium alloy frame, the same space-age material used in their lightest revolvers, Smith & Wesson shaved nearly half a pound off the traditional Commander-size 1911 while maintaining structural integrity. Combined with the round-butt profile, tritium night sights, and E-Series fit and finish, the 1911SC became one of the most practical carry 1911s available, proving that the century-old design could be adapted for modern concealed carry demands.

The 'SC' designation stands for Scandium, referring to the frame material that is a scandium-aluminum alloy offering the weight of aluminum with significantly greater strength. This allows the SW1911SC to handle the recoil forces of the .45 ACP cartridge reliably despite its extremely light weight. The E-Series designation indicates Smith & Wesson's enhanced production line 1911s, which sit between the base SW1911 models and the Performance Center custom models. E-Series features include enhanced machine cuts, premium grips, and improved fit and finish. The round-butt (bobtail) frame profile rounds the lower rear corner of the mainspring housing, eliminating the sharp point of a standard 1911 grip that can print through clothing or cause discomfort during extended carry. The tritium night sights are a significant upgrade over standard 3-dot sights for a pistol designed for concealed carry. At 28.8 ounces empty, the SW1911SC is one of the lightest Commander-size .45 ACP 1911 pistols available from a major manufacturer, though the reduced weight increases felt recoil compared to steel-framed models. The 4.25-inch barrel produces muzzle velocities approximately 15-25 fps lower than a 5-inch Government barrel with standard 230-grain loads. Model number 108485. MSRP is approximately $1,739.
