The Smith & Wesson M&P40 M2.0 Compact is a compact, polymer-framed, striker-fired semi-automatic pistol chambered in .40 S&W. Introduced in 2017 as part of the M&P M2.0 second-generation lineup, the M&P40 M2.0 Compact offers the higher energy and larger bullet diameter of the .40 S&W cartridge in a compact frame sized to compete with pistols like the Glock 23. The pistol features a 4.0-inch stainless steel barrel, 7.3-inch overall length, and 13+1 round capacity. It inherits all M2.0 improvements including the extended steel chassis embedded within the polymer frame for enhanced rigidity and accuracy, aggressive grip texture covering all surfaces for improved control under the increased recoil of the .40 S&W cartridge, a refined flat-face trigger with approximately 5.5-pound pull weight and tactile/audible reset, and four interchangeable palmswell inserts (S, M, ML, L) for customizable hand fit. The stainless steel slide and barrel are treated with Smith & Wesson's proprietary Armornite corrosion-resistant finish. At 24.0 ounces unloaded, the M&P40 M2.0 Compact balances duty-level stopping power with compact concealability, making it suitable for both law enforcement duty carry and civilian concealed carry.

The M&P40 M2.0 Compact continues the .40 S&W tradition that was especially popular among U.S. law enforcement agencies from the 1990s through the 2010s. While many agencies have transitioned back to 9mm, the .40 S&W M&P models remain popular with officers and civilians who prefer the cartridge's greater energy delivery. The M&P platform was specifically designed from the outset to accommodate multiple calibers on the same frame size.

Smith & Wesson M&P40 M2.0 Compact specifications

The M&P40 M2.0 Compact ships with two 13-round magazines. A 3.6-inch barrel variant is also available with the same 13-round capacity but a shorter overall length of 6.8 inches. Available with or without an ambidextrous manual thumb safety. The .40 S&W chambering produces noticeably more felt recoil than the 9mm variant, but the M2.0's aggressive grip texture and low bore axis help mitigate muzzle rise. The Compact uses the same frame dimensions as the 9mm M&P9 M2.0 Compact. Full-size M&P40 M2.0 15-round magazines will also function with a slight protrusion.
