About the Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0

The Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0 is a full-size, polymer-framed, striker-fired semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum. Introduced in 2017 as the second generation of the Military & Police (M&P) line originally launched in 2005, the M2.0 features significant improvements over its predecessor including an enhanced aggressive grip texture covering all grip surfaces, an extended steel chassis embedded within the polymer frame for improved rigidity and accuracy, a refined trigger with lighter pull weight and shorter reset, and four interchangeable palmswell inserts for customizable hand fit. The pistol features a low bore axis with an 18-degree grip angle to reduce perceived recoil and speed target reacquisition. The stainless steel barrel and slide are treated with Smith & Wesson's proprietary Armornite corrosion-resistant finish. By 2011, the M&P platform had been adopted or approved for duty by over 800 law enforcement agencies in the United States and 16 other countries, with notable foreign adoptions including the Iraqi military (7,500 M&P9 pistols procured through the U.S. Army in 2008), the Belgian Federal Police, and the National Police Agency of Taiwan.

The M&P name dates back to 1899 when Smith & Wesson first introduced a revolver line for military and police use. The modern polymer M&P was designed specifically to challenge Glock's dominance in the law enforcement market, and its distinctive 18-degree grip angle has won converts who find it more natural than Glock's 22-degree angle.

The M&P abbreviation stands for 'Military & Police,' continuing a naming tradition Smith & Wesson established with their iconic M&P revolver line beginning in 1899. The M2.0 designation indicates the second major generation of the modern polymer-framed pistol series. The original M&P was introduced in 2005 and the M2.0 update arrived in 2017. The pistol is available with or without an ambidextrous manual thumb safety. The M&P series is also manufactured in .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and .30 Super Carry calibers. Compact variants with 3.6-inch and 4.0-inch barrels use 15-round magazines, while a long-slide 5-inch variant is available for competition use. The M&P9 M2.0 Metal variant, introduced in 2023, features an aluminum frame instead of polymer, increasing weight to approximately 850 grams. Optics-ready versions with milled slides for red dot sight mounting are available across most M2.0 models. The 18-degree grip angle is notably steeper than the Glock's 22-degree angle, which many shooters find more natural for point shooting.
