About the Steyr HS .460

The Steyr HS .460 is an Austrian single-shot, bolt-action anti-materiel sniper rifle chambered in the proprietary .460 Steyr (11.65x90.5mm) cartridge, a necked-down .50 BMG case. It is a variant of the Steyr HS .50 developed as a legal alternative for jurisdictions that restrict rifles of .50 calibre or larger. Introduced in 2004, it uses a manually operated bolt with a cold hammer-forged, fluted 838 mm barrel, a two-stage adjustable trigger, an efficient muzzle brake and an adjustable bipod, feeding a single 600-grain bullet at around 910 m/s for extreme-range precision fire.

The .460 Steyr was engineered by Horst Grillmayer and unveiled alongside the HS .50 at the 2004 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, giving shooters in regions that outlaw .50-calibre rifles a heavy long-range cartridge that stays just under the legal threshold.

The .460 Steyr cartridge fires a roughly 600-grain (38.9 g) spire-point bullet and was created specifically to circumvent bans on .50-calibre and larger civilian rifles while retaining anti-materiel performance close to the .50 BMG. The rifle ships without iron sights, accepting customer-supplied optics on its Picatinny 1913 rail.
