The Steyr SSG 69 (Scharfschützengewehr 69) is a bolt-action sniper rifle that became one of the defining military precision rifles of the Cold War era. Introduced in 1969 for the Austrian Bundesheer, the SSG 69 was revolutionary for its time with its synthetic stock, rotary magazine, and rear-locking bolt design. Its combination of accuracy, reliability, and moderate weight made it one of the most widely adopted military and police sniper rifles in Western countries during the 1970s through 1990s, and it continues to serve with several nations.

The Steyr SSG 69 gained worldwide fame when German counter-terrorism unit GSG 9 used it during the dramatic 1977 rescue of Lufthansa Flight 181 in Mogadishu, Somalia. The rifle's performance during that operation established it as the gold standard for police precision rifles and launched a wave of international adoption that made it the most widely used European sniper rifle of the Cold War era.

Steyr SSG 69 specifications

The SSG 69's distinctive Schmeisser rotary magazine holds 5 rounds and provides extremely reliable feeding. The rear-locking bolt with six lugs is notably smooth and fast to cycle. Early production used wood stocks before transitioning to the green synthetic (Cycolac) stock. The SSG 69 PII variant uses a detachable box magazine instead of the rotary magazine. The PIV variant features a shorter 16.7-inch barrel for close-range law enforcement use. The rifle was used by GSG 9 during the 1977 Mogadishu hijacking rescue operation.
