About the Steyr SSG 69 PIV

The Steyr SSG 69 PIV is a compact bolt-action sniper rifle, the shortest member of the SSG 69 family developed for close-quarters and urban precision work by police and special operations units. It shares the SSG 69's rear-locking rotary-bolt action, five-round Schmeisser rotary magazine, and cold-hammer-forged barrel, but pairs them with a much shorter 409 mm barrel wearing a threaded muzzle and flash hider. The 1-in-10-inch (254 mm) twist is optimized to stabilize heavy subsonic 7.62x51mm loads, and the muzzle threading allows rapid fitment of a sound suppressor, making the PIV well suited to discreet, suppressed engagements at moderate range.

Where the original SSG 69 earned fame as a long-range military sniper rifle, the stubby PIV answered a different need: the rise of urban counter-terrorism and hostage-rescue work, where teams wanted the SSG's proven accuracy in a package short enough to maneuver through doorways and stairwells and quiet enough, with a suppressor and subsonic ammunition, to take a precise shot without giving away a position.

The PIV is the compact, suppressor-oriented variant of the SSG 69. Its 409 mm barrel and 254 mm (1:10 inch) twist are chosen to stabilize heavy subsonic ammunition, and the threaded muzzle accepts a flash hider or sound moderator. Muzzle velocity and effective range are reduced relative to the full-length SSG 69 because of the shorter barrel and subsonic-focused role.

This is a variant of the Steyr SSG 69.
