About the Tikka M49

The Tikka M49 is a Finnish break-action shotgun manufactured by Tikkakoski Oy from 1950. Chambered for the 12/70 (12 gauge, 70 mm) shotshell, it is a side-by-side double-barrel hunting gun with a wooden stock and a hinged, break-open action. It was one of the early post-war sporting shotguns produced at the Tikkakoski works in central Finland and was aimed at the domestic hunting market. Roughly 1,800 examples were made, with serial numbers beginning at 1000, making surviving guns collectible curios today.

Built at the Tikkakoski arms works in central Finland just after World War II, the M49 was one of the plant's civilian sporting shotguns during an era when Tikkakoski was better known for its Suomi submachine guns and later its precision bolt-action rifles.

Sources give the M49 designation to Tikkakoski shotguns in both 12/70 and 16/70 chamberings; the 12/70 side-by-side is the most commonly documented configuration.
