About the Winchester SXP
The Winchester SXP (Super X Pump) is a pump-action shotgun manufactured for Winchester Repeating Arms by FN Herstal's subsidiary facilities and imported through the Browning Arms Company. Introduced in 2009 as the successor to the Winchester Model 1300 (which ceased production in 2006), the SXP features Winchester's signature inertia-assisted pump action that uses the shooter's recoil energy to initiate the rearward movement of the fore-end, resulting in faster cycling. The heart of the SXP is its rotary bolt with four massive locking lugs that provide strong, reliable lockup. The drop-out trigger group allows easy cleaning and maintenance without tools. The SXP Defender series is designed for home defense and security applications with 18-inch barrels, while the Marine Defender variants feature hard chrome plating on the barrel, magazine tube, action bars, chamber, and bore for superior corrosion resistance. Hunting models are available with 26-inch, 28-inch, or 30-inch barrels and Invector-Plus choke tubes. Available in both 12 and 20 gauge with 3-inch chambers, with some waterfowl models chambered for 3.5-inch magnum shells.
The SXP's signature inertia-assisted pump action uses the shooter's own recoil energy to begin unlocking the action, meaning the fore-end starts moving rearward on its own before the shooter even begins the pump stroke. This allows experienced shooters to cycle the action so fast that it approaches semi-automatic rates of fire, earning it the nickname 'speed pump' among shotgun enthusiasts.

The Winchester SXP's inertia-assisted action is often marketed as enabling faster follow-up shots compared to conventional pump-action shotguns. The mechanism uses the shooter's own recoil energy to begin unlocking and moving the action rearward, so the shooter only needs to complete the pump stroke. The SXP is manufactured at FN facilities (primarily in Turkey and Portugal) and imported by the Browning Arms Company, which handles Winchester's shotgun and rifle lines. The Marine Defender's hard chrome plating makes it particularly popular among boaters, coastal residents, and anyone in corrosive environments. The Invector-Plus choke tube system is interchangeable across the entire SXP line. The drop-out trigger group is shared with other Winchester pump-action designs and simplifies maintenance considerably.
