The Winchester Model 1892 is a lever-action repeating rifle designed by John Browning as a smaller lighter version of his large-frame Model 1886. The original chamberings of the 1892 were the .32-20, .38-40 and .44-40 centrefire rounds followed in 1895 by the .25-20. More than one million Model 1892s were ultimately produced, and the rifle became closely associated with ranching, hunting and the American West, later achieving further fame through Western films and television. The rifle, serial number 883797, falls in the 1919 production year and is chambered in the classic .38-40 WCF. Manufactured shortly after the end of the First World War, it represents the later period of original 1892 production, by which time the design had already been in service for more than a quarter of a century. This example is in good mechanical order retaining a tight action, and smooth lever function.
