The Colt Python is a double-action/single-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, widely regarded as one of the finest production revolvers ever manufactured. Introduced in 1955 as Colt's premium revolver, the Python was built on the Colt I-frame and distinguished by its full-length underlug barrel, ventilated rib, and exceptionally smooth trigger pull achieved through hand-fitting and tuning during original production. The Python's action is a traditional double-action revolver mechanism - the trigger both cocks and releases the hammer in double-action mode, or the hammer can be manually cocked for a lighter single-action trigger pull. The cylinder rotates counterclockwise (opposite to Smith & Wesson revolvers) and locks at the front, rear, and bottom for superior rigidity and accuracy. Originally produced from 1955 to 2005, the Python was discontinued due to the rising cost of hand-fitting each unit. Colt reintroduced the Python in January 2020 with a modernized design featuring investment-cast stainless steel construction, a redesigned trigger mechanism, and improved durability.
