About the Mauser SP66
The Mauser SP66 (Scharfschutzen-Pistole 66) was a precision bolt-action sniper rifle developed by Mauser for military and law enforcement use during the Cold War era. Based on the Mauser Model 66 sporting rifle action with its distinctive telescoping bolt design, the SP66 featured a set trigger capable of a remarkably light pull, a free-floating heavy barrel, and was typically fitted with a Zeiss Diavari variable-power scope. The SP66 was widely exported and served with military and police forces across Europe, the Middle East, and South America.
The SP66 was developed partly in response to the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, which exposed West Germany's lack of precision counter-terrorism equipment. GSG 9, the elite German federal police counter-terrorism unit formed in the aftermath of Munich, adopted the SP66 as one of its primary sniper platforms. The rifle's set trigger, an old Germanic hunting tradition, provided match-level trigger control that was ideal for the surgical precision required in hostage rescue scenarios.

The SP66's most distinctive feature was its set trigger system, which allowed the trigger pull to be reduced to approximately 0.8 kg (8N) when 'set,' providing exceptional trigger control for precision shots. The Mauser Model 66 short-stroke bolt action was unique in that the bolt head rotated within a non-rotating bolt body, with locking lugs at the rear rather than the front of the bolt. This unconventional design resulted in a very short bolt throw. The rifle was typically supplied with the Zeiss Diavari ZA 1.5-6x42mm variable scope. The SP66 was eventually replaced by the Mauser SR93 and later the Mauser M18.
