About the Mossberg Model 340

The Mossberg Model 340 is an American hammerless bolt-action repeating rifle chambered in .22 Long Rifle, produced by O.F. Mossberg & Sons from 1958 to 1971. Fed from a 7-round detachable box magazine, it was one of Mossberg's many affordable .22 sporting rifles, marketed to plinkers, small-game hunters and young shooters. Most versions carried a Monte Carlo stock with a cheekpiece, pistol grip and sling swivels, a 24-inch barrel, and a receiver grooved for scope mounting. The series spanned several closely related variants, including the target-styled 340B, the standard 340K, and the short-barrelled Mannlicher-stocked 340M carbine.

Inexpensive Mossberg .22 bolt guns like the 340 series were quintessential mid-century American 'boy's first rifle' and farm plinkers, sold in the hundreds of thousands through hardware stores and mail order at a fraction of the cost of premium sporters.

Mossberg Model 340 specifications

Barrel length was 24 inches on the 340B and 340K but 18.25 inches on the Mannlicher-stocked 340M carbine (1970-1971). Chambers accept .22 Short, .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle interchangeably. Variants used suffixes such as 340B, 340B-A, 340K, 340K-A and 340M to denote sight and stock configuration changes over the production run.
