About the Pietta 1858 New Model Army

The Pietta 1858 New Model Army is a reproduction of the Remington Model 1858, widely regarded as the strongest and most reliable percussion revolver of the Civil War era. Its solid top strap design provides superior frame strength compared to open-top Colt designs, and the easily removable cylinder allows for fast reloading with pre-loaded spare cylinders. Pietta's extensive lineup includes standard, Target (adjustable sights), Buffalo (12" barrel), Sheriff (3" barrel), RMG Texas, and stainless steel variants.

The Remington 1858 New Model Army was the second most widely used revolver in the American Civil War after the Colt Army. Its defining advantage was the solid top strap that enclosed the cylinder, creating a stronger frame that could handle heavier powder charges and providing a natural groove for sighting. The removable cylinder - achieved by dropping the loading lever and pulling the cylinder pin - allowed soldiers to carry pre-loaded spare cylinders for rapid reloading in combat, a capability no Colt percussion revolver offered.
