About the Remington Model 582
The Remington Model 582 is a .22 LR bolt-action rimfire rifle introduced in 1967 as the tubular-magazine member of Remington's 580 series of inexpensive sporting and training rifles. Chambered for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle, it feeds from a tubular magazine running beneath the barrel that holds roughly 20 Long Rifle cartridges (more of the shorter rounds). Its bolt uses six rear locking lugs, a design shared with the box-magazine Model 581 and the centerfire Model 788, giving the action a short bolt lift and smooth cycling. The 582 was a popular plinking and small-game rifle, with about 90,708 built before production ended in 1983.
The 582's tubular magazine let it hold a full tube of .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle at once, and its six-rear-lug bolt was shared with the centerfire Remington Model 788, making the humble rimfire plinker a mechanical cousin of one of Remington's most accurate budget centerfire rifles.
