Also known as Ruger No. 1H Tropical, Ruger Number One Tropical
About the Ruger No. 1 Tropical .458 Lott
The Ruger No. 1 Tropical is a single-shot falling-block hunting rifle chambered here in the potent .458 Lott dangerous-game cartridge. Part of the Ruger No. 1 family introduced in 1967, the Tropical (model 1H) is the heavy-barreled dangerous-game configuration, fitted with a barrel-band front sight, adjustable open express-style rear sights and a machined quarter-rib scope base. Its Farquharson-inspired underlever action drops the breechblock to load and cocks the internal hammer on closing, giving a compact, strong, break-open-free platform ideal for the largest African and Asian bores.
Ruger stockmaker Lenard Brownell, who shaped the No. 1, recalled testing the action: 'There was never any question about the strength of the action. I remember, in testing it, how much trouble I had trying to tear it up. In fact, I never did manage to blow one apart.'
