About the Stevens Model 73 Y

The Stevens Model 73 Y is the youth version of the Stevens Model 73, a single-shot, bolt-action rimfire rifle chambered in .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle. Produced by Savage's J. Stevens division from 1965 to 1980, the 73 Y features a shortened 18-inch barrel and a 12.5-inch length of pull to fit younger shooters. It uses an anodized cast aluminum alloy receiver grooved for a scope, an exposed hammer, and an automatic safety that engages whenever the bolt is opened.

The Model 73 line was among Savage-Stevens' most affordable boys' rifles, and its safety was designed to apply itself automatically every time the bolt was opened - a deliberate feature to protect the young beginners the 73 Y was built for.
